The Works of Nicola Samorì

The paintings of Italian artist, Nicola Samori, are full of sensuous energy. The thirty-five year old’s style is derived from the classical paintings of early renaissance masters. With the highest degree of precession, his figures emerge from the darkness of pictorial space into the light with dramatic realism.

Samori’s methodology is one that intertwines both violence and romance, which make his paintings all the more painful: He distorts them, smears them with his hand, disfigures hem with the palette knife, paints them over, or like a torturer removes the half-dry skin of the uppermost layer of paint with a scalpel. Yet, through this destructive deconstruction, his compositions have an eery sense of beauty and elegance.

New Sculptures by Jessica Dalva Come to Life

The last time we featured sculptor Jessica Laurel Louise, aka Jessica Dalva, she was exploring a ritualistic narrative with her feminine works. In the two years since, her art has developed to reflect a multitude of personal interests and skills; her hand-painted sculptures, shadow boxes, drawings, and recently, clay animation, collectively exhibit a cinematic taste. Communicating movement has become an important focus for Dalva. She keeps a diary of her excursions at her blog, from her travels to studying animal anatomy at Natural History Museum, and drying scarves in the wind. These have had a noticeable effect on her artwork.

Eddy Stevens's Paintings Hint at Supernatural

OccurrencesBelgian-born, French-based artist Eddy Stevens’s rich paintings convey the presence of otherworldly forces. In one piece, small rocks float inside a room as if magnetized, ready to launch an attack at a vulnerable, nude character cowering in the corner. In other pieces, human bodies improbably float, hovering in cannonball positions that seem too static to abide by the normal laws of gravity. There appears to be an energetic forcefield in this strange world set in the wooded European countryside. His disrobed characters (which Stevens models after his wife) suggest a return to a more primal way of being, which Stevens depicts with technical mastery.

Floto+Warner Studio: Colorful Liquid Splashes Captured at 1/3500th of a Second Look Like Floating Sculpturest

Cassandra Warner and Jeremy Floto of Floto+Warner Studio recently produced this beautiful series of photos titled Clourant that seemingly turns large splashes of colorful liquid into glistening sculptures that hover in midair.  The photos were shot at a speed of 1/3,500th of a second, taking special care to disguise the origin of each burst making images appear almost digital in nature (the duo assures no Photoshop was used).
